Stroke is a Medical Emergency

Lives could be saved and disability reduced if strokes were treated as a medical emergency.

Stroke is the UK's third biggest killer.  Approximately 4000 people in Northern Ireland will have a stroke this year.  Stroke is also the leading cause of severe disability.  In NI 10,000 people are living with aphasia, a devastating communication disability.

The FAST Campaign aims to raise public awareness of the symptoms and signs of stroke.  The public are being asked to act FAST on stroke by recognising the signs and calling 999.

FAST stands for:

F  Facial weakness

A  Arm weakness

S  Speech problems

T  Test all three

Treating stroke as a medical emergency would improve the outcome for thousands of stroke patients.  Remember act FAST and call 999.
